The Juniper bonsai after thorough cleaning of the deadwood and live veins.

Two coats of Lime-Sulphur were applied to the deadwood to lighten it and it was time to wire the branches into position.

I began laying out the foliage of the bonsai, starting from the bottom/first branch and working upwards. In the image above, just the very top branch still needs placement.

I wanted to create the appearance of a very shallow foliage mass for this tree to accentuate the flow and visual speed of the branches. Thick, heavy foliage pads would have weakened the power of the branches and looked out of place. However Juniper, as with all coniferous species, require a certain mass of foliage to survive and so while the foliage pads were very shallow in height, I made them very wide and spread-out, allowing a large surface area of foliage, hidden from the front of the bonsai.
